For the Cardinal Classics mahjong set, I wanted to create mahjong packaging that focused on the experience of opening it. For this reason, the major graphic elements are contained to the interior faces of the drawers. Those graphics draw their inspiration from Japanese art forms such as kirie and ukiyo-e. The center of those compositions feature a mahjong symbol that corresponds the the type of tile contained within each drawer. Behind these symbols are a pattern made from elements seen in Japanese art that also reflect the shape of the symbol on that drawer.
