The Sympathizer Book Cover
In The Sympathizer, the unnamed, half-Vietnamese protagonist is a double agent, torn between both North and South Vietnam and the Eastern and Western World. This caused him to develop a sense of general ambiguity. I split the narrator’s face between the covers and gave him inconsistent features to represent this internal conflict. The protagonist’s isolated mole on the front cover also symbolizes his own feelings of alienation.
The Old Man and The Sea Book Cover
For the cover of The Old Man and The Sea, I wanted to focus on the tension between the protagonist, Santiago, and his marlin adversary. I chose to focus on an image of a hand gripping a fishing line to represent Santiago’s physical and metaphorical ties to the fish. The back depicts the marlin following the same angle as the line, reinforcing the theme of their link with one another.
